TOEFL Exam Pattern


The TOEFL iBT is divided into four sections:

  • 1. Reading
    • Duration : 54 - 72 minutes.
    • Tasks :
      • 3 - 4 academic passages (700 words each).
      • 30 - 40 questions.
    • Skills Assessed : Reading comprehension, vocabulary, and critical analysis.
  • 2. Listening
    • Duration : 41 - 57 minutes.
    • Tasks :
      • 3 - 4 lectures (3 - 5 minutes each) with 6 questions per lecture.
      • 2 - 3 conversations (3 minutes each) with 5 questions per conversation.
    • Skills Assessed : Understanding main ideas, details, and speaker intent.
  • 3. Speaking
    • Duration : 17 minutes.
    • Tasks : 4 tasks, including independent and integrated speaking.
    • Skills Assessed : Fluency, clarity, and the ability to express ideas in English.
  • 4. Writing
    • Duration : 50 minutes.
    • Tasks :
      • 1 integrated task (20 minutes): Based on a reading and listening passage.
      • 1 independent task (30 minutes): Opinion-based essay.
    • Skills Assessed : Coherence, grammar, and vocabulary.

TOEFL Syllabus


  • Reading :

Marks Pattern


  • Scoring Range : 0 - 120 (30 points per section).
  • Score Breakdown :
    • Reading : 0 - 30
    • Listening : 0 - 30
    • Speaking : 0 - 30
    • Writing : 0 - 30
  • Final Score : The sum of the four sections.
  • Proficiency Levels :
    • Reading and Listening : High (22 - 30), Intermediate (15 - 21), and Low (0 - 14).
    • Speaking : Good (26 - 30), Fair (18 - 25), Limited (10 - 17), and Weak (0 - 9).
    • Writing : Good (24 - 30), Fair (17 - 23), and Limited (1 - 16).

Mode of Exam


  • TOEFL iBT : Administered online at test centers or at home (Home Edition).
  • TOEFL PBT : Paper-based, available in specific locations.

Fee Structure


  • Fee in India : Approx. $190 - $215 (varies by location).
  • Additional Fees :
    • Late registration : $40
    • Score review : $80 per section

Test Procedure
