IELTS Exam Pattern


  • Listening:
    • Duration : 30 minutes + 10 minutes to transfer answers.
    • Format : Four recordings with 40 questions.
    • Question Types : Multiple choice, matching, map/diagram labeling, summary completion.
  • Reading :
    • Duration : 60 minutes.
    • Format :
      • Academic : 3 passages with 40 questions.
      • General Training : 3 sections on everyday topics.
    • Question Types : True/False/Not Given, matching headings, multiple choice, summary completion.
  • Writing:
    • Duration : 60 minutes.
    • Tasks :
      • Academic :
        • Task 1 : Describe a chart/graph (150 words).
        • Task 2 : Write an essay (250 words).
      • General Training :
        • Task 1 : Write a letter (formal/informal) (150 words).
        • Task 2 : Write an essay (250 words).
  • Speaking :
    • Duration : 11–14 minutes.
    • Format:
      • Part 1 : General introduction and questions.
      • Part 2 : 2-minute talk on a given topic (cue card).
      • Part 3 : Discussion related to Part 2.

IELTS Syllabus

  • Reading :

Marks Pattern


  • Scoring : Each section (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking) is scored on a band scale of 0-9.
  • Overall Band Score: Average of the four section scores, rounded to the nearest 0.5 or whole number.
  • Band Descriptors:
    • Band 9: Expert user.
    • Band 8: Very good user.
    • Band 7: Good user.
    • Band 6: Competent user.
    • Band 5: Modest user.
    • Band 4: Limited user.

  • Paper-Based Test : Uses physical question papers and answer sheets.
